There she goes, beautiful and safe…

Septiembre 1st, 2010
MUDE – The Fashion and Design Museum – invites you to travel through time “on a scooter” – traversing 25 years of the history of this charming motorised vehicle, via this exhibition.

“There she goes, beautiful and safe. Scooters from the João Seixas Collection”, is the title of this exhibition, thus paraphrasing the stanza by the poet, Luís Vaz de Camões, who described Leonor as she walked barefoot to the natural spring, beautiful, but not safe.

The evolution in the design, silhouette, form, colours and materials of the various models now on display at MUDE, will simultaneously remind older generations and introduce younger generations to a collection of “vespas” that several decades ago raced through the streets of Lisbon, Portugal and the world.

Altered and adapted between 1945 and 1970 – in tune with changing mentalities and socio-cultural contexts – visitors are certain to be surprised by many of the models on display, while some will have already driven identical models. Nowadays, with modern daring designs, many other scooters continue to circulate through the streets.

Curiously, some call these models scooters, others call them vespas and others still call them lambrettas… Notwithstanding these different designations – which vary in function of the interlocutor – the charm of this machine appeals to all.

The Twins

Agosto 30th, 2010
The Twins
The Berardo Collection Museum hosts for the first time in Portugal the graphic works by the Brazilians Otávio and Gustavo Pandolfo, identical twins, born  in 1974, and authors of graffiti art on walls in the four corners of the world.
On the Museum’s level 0 the most important works by these artists are on display as well as some unique works produced in situ for this show in Lisboa. Known as “The Twins”, Otávio and Gustavo Pandolfo began their graffiti at the end of the 1980’s in the district of Cambuci (south of São Paulo), where they were born. Street art and creations designed for works and installations in galleries and museums are inspired from the brothers’ surreal universe.

The National Day of Catalonia

Agosto 29th, 2010

On September 11th, 1714, Barcelona surrendered and fell to the Castilian army. Catalonia, which has been a sovereign nation up to that point, lost its national rights and liberties, with its own laws abolished and Catalan language and culture banned.

Every September 11th the Catalans want to remember what it was like not to be free, many of them continue to demonstrate in the streets to demand recognition of their national rights and liberties and a greater degree of self-government.

In 1979 the new Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia was approved, giving the country its own institutions and government.

The national day is an occasion for singing the Catalan National Anthem and for separatist demonstrations and meetings. Since the year 2000, around two hundred institutions from Catalan Civil society have staged an event that includes an exhibition of these organizations, the reading of a manifesto that has the support of all the organizations involved and finally a music concert to round off the celebration.

On September 11th there will be concerts, demonstrations and parades throughout Barcelona, you will see many Catalan flags on balconies all over the city an throughout the region. According to a legend, la Senyera (as the Catalan Flag is called) was first used during the 900’s. That makes it one of the oldest flags in Europe still in use.
