Barcelona – And all that…Jazz..

There may not be a jazz bar on every street corner in Barcelona but when you do stumble across one, the standards are high with quality international and local acts on offer.

Jamboree

One of Spain’s best-known jazz clubs and a highlight on the international jazz circuit is the award-winning Jamboree. Such illustrious musicians as Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Elvin Jones and Barcelona’s own Tete Montoliu have all left a note of their presence in the old stonewalls of this basement club. Located under the arches of Plaza Real, Jamboree is a must for any jazz aficionado in Barcelona. Concerts start around 21h with funk djs opening up the dance floor after midnight. For those who like a jam, go for the WTF Sessions on a Monday night.

A great place to hear veteran artists as well as up-and-coming talent, Jazzman has a sit back with a whisky and let your foot tap kind of vibe.

NINJA TUNE PAAAARRTTTYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

This night is going to be big! There are not one but two very special guest djs flying in for the event!

King Cannibal is one of the hottest new names in the world of Bassline dance music. He has just signed to the great Ninja Tune record label – so you know he’s world class! An amazing producer with a really unique djing style mixing dubstep, drum and bass, reggae and breaks – this is next level, future djing and Bassline dance music and an intense dancefloor experience! Honestly, don’t miss him!!

DJ Wrongtom is the Tour DJ for indie-soul sensations Hard-Fi. He has rocked arenas and stadiums all over the world with his amazing mash up style of djing. Expect plenty or reggae flavour but basically anything goes as long as it rocks the house!!. He’s just come out of the studio after remixing the new Roots Manuva album in a rub-a-dub style alongside helping produce Hard-Fi and his various reggae and jazz projects as well a multitude of remix work.

BBE Records and Scanner FM’s Global SoulJah will be warming up proceedings with his eclectic style of music described as “where music of black origin and global grooves meet a techno future”. Expect a freestyle party selection of bad boy tunes. Check his show every Saturday night, 11PM – 12pm in Barcelona and the surrounding areas on Scanner 96.6FM.

Arrive early if you want to ensure entry. It’s first come, first serve and at the last party there were over 100 people waiting one out, one in… DJ Wrongtom kicks off at 2am so arrive before then anyway!

Barcelona in December 08.

Well, it’s hard to think December without thinking Christmas but, apart from the Fira de Santa Llucia, Barcelona is not completely consumed by the festive season. In fact, the International Festival of Contemporary Art, BAC!, and the World Press Photo Exhibition both explore hard-hitting contemporary issues. Slice of chocolate Yule log, anyone?

World Press Photo Exhibition
19/11 – 14/12/08

This outstanding photojournalism exhibition displays the winning images from the annual World Press Photo competition. The touring exhibition travels to 80 cities in 40 countries each year, on the condition that all photos be shown without censorship. There are 11 categories, among them: news events, current affairs, people in the news, action photography, daily life and art… The competition is judged by an international, independent jury and the winning images are frequently both challenging and moving

BAC! Barcelona Art Contemporani
02/12 – 28/12/08

The theme of the 9th International Festival of Contemporary Art in Barcelona is: WAKE UP! Artists explore the consequences of a western world obsessed by consumerism, fashion, advertising and, in particular, the effects of the media on creating, or destroying, our notions of happiness. Photographers, designers, video artists, illustrators, sculptors and more are featured in the month-long event that includes conferences, workshops, fashion parades and some radical Bakito kids…

Fira de Santa Llucia
29/11 – 23/12/08

Okay, let’s get the shitting log and shitting man thing out of the way. As in, yes, the Catalan tradition at Christmas is to put a man doing a poo, aka the caganer, in a reasonably subtle location, somewhere behind the barn, of the nativity scene. And the way kids get their presents on a day that doesn’t celebrate the birth of a saviour but the arrival of his gifts (Jan 6) is to hit a hollow log, the cagatió, with a stick and shout, ‘shit, log, shit’. Reality shits, apparently. All these things, and more, can be found at the Christmas fair outside Barcelona Cathedral.
