14 June 2009: Catalonian Moto GP

The Catalonian Moto GP is one of the most popular rounds of the World Championship. Held at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, it attracts holidaymakers and race fans alike. Drawing crowds of 100,000, the atmosphere is always electric.

The Moto GP is one of the fastest, most thrilling sports in the world. The bikes reach speeds of up to 310kph (185 mph) and the races are extremely competitive. Unlike Formula One racing, overtaking is frequent. The riders take the bravest lines to weave through the field and when the bikes close on each other they push it to the limit.

You get the feeling that the crowd is collectively holding its breath as the riders brake as late as possible into the corners. Then there is the engine noise, piercing the air as the riders fly by, a constant reminder of the sheer power that they are fighting to control.

  • Where: Circuit de Catalunya
  • When: the race starts in the morning
  • Cost: tickets are still available – please visit the website for more information

    24 June 2009: Saint John’s Day

Every year St John’s Day (Sant Joan) is celebrated throughout Spain with an explosion of bonfires, fireworks, concerts and dances. Catalonians celebrate in their idiosyncratic way and Barcelona is one of the most spectacular places to join in the fun.

The fiesta takes place the night before Saint John’s Day, and during the short nights of the summer solstice. It is a long-standing tradition that combines fun with aspects of Catalonian identity. Old furniture is bundled onto bonfires in the villages and towns throughout the region, the fire acting as a purifier and curative element. At first, this was a rite celebrated in the main village square that brought everyone together round the fire. Nowadays fireworks are also an integral part.

For the past 50 years or so in Catalonia, the flama del Canigó (Canigó flame – an emblematic mountain in the Pyrenees) has been part of the celebration. From the top of this mountain, the flames spread throughout the region as fires are lit in each community. The flame has contributed to a new vision of the celebration and signifies Catalan unity and identity.

The most enjoyable part of the Noche de Sant Joan are the verbenas (open-air celebrations) that last from sunset on 23 June to sunrise on 24 June. As well as in each village, there are various places in Barcelona where they take place. The main ones are in Eixample, Ciutat Velha, Sants-Montjuic, Les Corts, Sarná Gervasi, Horta Guinardó, Nou Barris, Sant Andrea and Sant Martí. Alongside the bonfire and fireworks there are stages, concerts, dances and, of course, the eating of the traditional sweet cocas.

Nowadays, the masses gather on Calle Grande de Gràcia to collect the volley of sweets thrown from the carriages into the crowd. The festivities come to a glorious end with a firework display in the Jardinets de Gràcia.

Lisbon – Praça do Comércio District.

    praaa-do-comercio

The Praça do Comércio is presented as one of the most majestic squares of Lisbon and was once the main maritime entrance of the city. Even today you can see the marble staircase that comes out of the River Tagus towards Praça do Comércio. It is also known as Terreiro do Paço, clearly a reference to the palace that was here for about 400 years until 1755, when the earthquake destroyed it.

On the north side, the square is received by a grand arch that leads to Rua Augusta, perhaps the best known of the main areas of trade of central Lisbon. The arch is decorated with pictures of historical figures such as Vasco da Gama and Marquês de Pombal.

The magnificent arched buildings, which extend the other three sides of the square and still retain their original features, are to serve as the headquarters of government departments, banks and some of the most famous restaurants in Lisbon.
In this square there is also the oldest café in Lisbon, the “Martinho da Arcada” which opened at the time when oil lamps where used. This coffee was present in the great revolutions of the past two centuries, and received distinguished clients as Bocage, Fernando Pessoa and the muse of fado, Amália Rodrigues.

In the center of Praça do Comércio there is a magnificent statue of King Jose I, king of Portugal at the time of the 1755 earthquake that destroyed the downtown Lisbon almost completely.
