Rent4Days Lisbon Apartments recommends: Lisbon from various perspectives

Like many other cities in the world, Lisbon is so much more than monuments and churches. Lisbon is music, tiles and terraces. Lisbon is the “Tejo”, the sunlight and its PEOPLE. Lisbon is History and every little secret hidden in the corners of each single street.

Rent4Days has recently found a way of experiencing a different Lisbon perspective, away from touristic mobs and souvenir stores. A way of getting to know an authentic Lisbon, from sunrise to sunset.

Here are some hints that will most certainly give you different insights of this amazing treasure:

  • Lisbon by Segway – this is everything but a conventional tour experience. One thing we may assure you: you will end up loving Lisbon as much as we do!
  • Lisbon by Bicicle – more and more people are choosing bycicle as their favourite means of transportation in Lisbon (and with as large a percentage of sunny days a year it’s most likely that you’ll be surprised by magnificient sunny days inviting you to a ride!)
  • GoCars – these 3 wheelers are a funny way of providing you with intelligent talking tours while you decide where to go and at what pace! (and, believe it or not, jokes & anecdotes about our culture and history are included!)

…Then, for the perfect ending, a relaxing stay at one of Rent4Days Lisbon apartments, beautifully located in some of the most tipical neighbourhoods at your choice ;)

Fátima – Portugal

Fátima is a town in Portugal famous for the religious visions that reportedly took place there in 1917. The town itself has a population of 7,756 and is located in the municipality fo Ourém,in the Centro Region and sub region of Médio Tejo. It is in the district of Santarém and is included in the urban agglomeration of Leiria, in central Portugal, 123 km (76 mi) north of Lisbon.

Fátima is famous for the shrine called the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, built to commemorate the events of 1917 when three peasant children claimed to have seen the “Virgin of the Rosary”, Our Lady of Fátima. When the children asked for her name, she said “I am The Lady of The Rosary”. The children experienced the purported Marian apparitions  in a pasture called the the Cova da Iria.

The Marian shrine in Fátima attracts a large number of Catholics, and every year pilgrims fill the country road that leads to the shrine with crowds that approach one million on May 13 and October 13, the significant dates of Fatima apparitions.

On the far side of the esplanade rises the gigantic basilica, in neo-classical style, with a central tower 65 metres (213 ft) high, the construction of which was begun on 13 May 1928. It is flanked by colonnades linking it with the extensive conventual and hospital buildings. In the basilica are the tombs of the three seers, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, who died in 1919 and 1920 respectively in the Spanish flu pandemic, and were beatified in 2000, andLúcia dos Santos who died in 2005. The Igreja da Santíssima Trindade, one of the largest churches in the world, was built on the other side of the esplanade during the 2000s.

The oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the castle of Lisboa and the Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, with many fado bars and restaurants.During the times of moorish domination, Alfama constituted the whole of the city, which later spread to the West (baixa neighbourhood). Alfama became inhabited by the fishermen and the poor, and its condition as the neighbourhood of the poor continues to this day. The great 1755 Lisbon earthquake did not destroy the Alfama, which has remained a picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares. Lately the neighbourhood has been invigorated with the renovation of the old houses and new restaurants where fado – Portuguese typical melancholy music – can be enjoyed.

Galeria do Loreto- Troço Patriarcal / São Pedro de Alcântara

The Aqueduto das Águas Livres, for many years the water supply in the city of Lisbon. Originating in the area of Fine, this important piece of hydraulic engineering, makes its entrance into the city through the monumental arch of the Alcantara Valley and ends on Mother’s Water Reservoir in Amoreiras. The Gallery of Loreto, with a length of 2835m, is one of five main galleries, which led to supply water and fountains in the city. The Water Museum is proposing a visit to the section of 410m, this gallery, which connects the reservoir of the Patriarchate, located in the renovated basement of Jardim do Príncipe Real and the Jardim de S. Pedro de Alcântara. An adventure, guided by history and curiosities, made through narrow tunnels and humid. The visit begins below the Lake Garden, an octagonal tank off and turned into a cultural space, and ends, surprisingly, one of the most beautiful sights of Lisbon.
